I’m not sure this is the David Bernard I knew so well. David & his family were best friends with ours.  The Bernard’s moved to Albany, NY in ~ 1967. David became deeply depressed and spent the Summer of 1968 & ‘69 with us in St. Louis. He continued to struggle with deep issues and died shortly before graduation in 1970.  I was a palllbearer at his funeral on the morning of our commencement ceremony..something that has remained with me ever since.

David Bernard was the dearest, best and closest friend I ever had, we were extremely close and spent practically every day at one another's house from age 5 up to when his family moved away to Albany as Tom Bulle mentioned. I too was a pall bearer that day and was so lost and distraught that to this day our entire graduation week is still a blur.

David became mentally distraught and obsessed with trying to find what David referred to as "truth in this world". David committed suicide the week of our graduation and to this day thinking about David is tremendously painful.

David was a very sweet and loving person, he and I built play forts in his back yard quite often, playing soldier or hiding out in our fort or "Club" as he referred to it. Our main "fort" was about 8 feet square and 6 feet deep, covered with sheets of plywood we had "commandeered" from houses yet under construction nearby.

David was a straight A student, very smart and perhaps too deep in his introspection upon life when he returned from Albany. I only ask we honor David's memory as a deeply saddening and painful loss, mindful of the superb character and humanity David stood for in his kind, loving heart.
